![]() The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The park is south of the town of Big Pool on the Potomac River the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal runs through the park grounds. Fort Frederick State Parkįort Frederick State Park is a Maryland State park surrounding the restored Fort Frederick, a star fort active in the French and Indian War and the American Revolutionary War. Today it endures as a pathway for discovering historical, natural and recreational treasures! The park also offers public boat rides, hiking and biking, a full visitor center, and camping. Operating for nearly 100 years the canal was a lifeline for communities along the Potomac River as coal, lumber and agricultural products floated down the waterway to market. Preserving America’s early transportation history, the C&O Canal began as a dream of passage to Western wealth. Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park Great Falls Tavern, now the C&O Canal visitor center. The marsh areas have a variety of wildlife, including deer, waterfowl and feral horses. The bayside offers visitors the chance to explore secluded coves by canoe or kayak. It’s two miles of ocean beaches offer swimming, beachcombing, sunbathing, surfing and fishing. It is located on Assateague Island, a barrier island bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Sinepuxent Bay on the west. Assateague State Park is Maryland’s only oceanfront park. ![]() Most of the Maryland district is managed by the National Park Service as Assateague Island National Seashore.
